Scenery for FS2002
Lower Chehalis River Valley - Between Elma and Hoquiam in Washington State

The Project:

About halfway between Olympia, Washington and the Coast, you'll find the small town of Elma, Washington. It's about 20 miles east of Bowerman Field. The cooling towers of the Satsop Nuclear Power plant serve as a landmark; they're just to the southwest of the airport. The airport at Elma was the subject of my last scenery, elma2k2.zip. The river that flows past Elma empties into the harbor by Bowerman Airport in Hoquiam, Washington. (Bowerman was also one of my earlier projects (bman2k2.zip).

With this scenery, you can fly from Elma to Bowerman (about 20 miles) never leaving photo realistic scenery. You'll see the fertile valley of the Chehalis River. The river is a geologically old one, showing characteristic wide curves. You can see "oxbow" lakes in a few spots, formed as the changing river path cuts off one of its wide turns. You'll also see the towns of Montesano and Aberdeen.

Needed Other Downloads:

This upload is intended to connect my Elma project with my Bowerman project. While it will work as standalone scenery, it will not be blended at the ends to the default. I HIGHLY recommend you download my other projects if you don't have them already; they are located at all the major sim libraries. The file names are Elma2k2.zip and Bman2k2.zip.

Installation:

If you don't have Bowerman Field for fs2002 (bman2k2.zip), proceed per step one. If you already have Bowerman Field, skip step one and go to step two.

1. Please download bman2k2.zip from the main sites, www.SurClaro.com or www.SurClaro. Install per the read-me, by creating a new folder on your hard drive. Under that folder create new sub-folders called "scenery" and another called "texture". Unzip the sub-zip file called scenery.zip into scenery and texture.zip into texture, and you are ready to return to the install process above.

2. This scenery is best installed over top of your Bowerman Field files. If you do this you will overwrite several ground textures that I've improved from their original form in my Bowerman upload.

If you followed my instructions in my readme for bman2k2.zip, you created a folder name for that package. I called it "bowerman" on my hard drive, so I'll use that folder name in the example.

Just unzip bow_elma.zip into this folder. Then run the batch file called install.bat. Run this by opening windows explorer, and open the "bowerman" folder. Double click on the file "Install.bat". If you wish, you can also run this file from a dos window, or from the start/run option from the windows start button. That's it!

3. Then open flight sim 2002, and add or refresh the area using the world drop down menu. If this is the first time you installed bowerman at all, click on the "scenery library" button, and then "add area". Browse to the folder you created, and click ok. If you already had bowerman installed, just click on the library entry for bowerman, and then click "ok". The scenery should refresh, displaying the new addition. For this scenery to blend into Elma2k2.zip, make sure the bowerman folder is above the folder you installed Elma2k2.zip in the world/scenery library listing. Use the buttons "move up" or "move down" if needed.

Troubleshooting

If you see a dramatic difference between the bowerman strip and the new bow_elma scenery, then you may have installed bow_elma separately from Bowerman. This setup will work fine, but causes some discontinuity. To fix this, re-install bow_elma into the same folder as bowerman, as described above.

If you see a discontinuity between this scenery and Elma field, then check the order of scenery in the world library pull down menu. Move Bowerman up so that it appears above Elma.

If you see an ugly transition at either the east or west end of the scenery consisting of a straight-line transition between the photo realistic work and the default, you are missing my airport sceneries called bman2k2.zip and elma2k2.zip.

A note about GEO-Referencing

I have tested this scenery extensively with the default mesh and with mesh created by Steve Greenwood, called fst-30m10-wa-ef.zip (available at www.SurClaro.com). It may be imperfect when using other mesh available. Steve's work is stunning, and I highly recommend it. I've never found another as good.

A note about Custom Land Class

This work is designed to blend with the default, and my apology to users that wish it blended better with some other land class files. If anyone would like to edit my work for custom blending, let me know. I'd be happy to support you in such an endeavor.

Thanks and Appreciation:

Ken Meier thanks for beta testing and constant morale boosts.

Thanks to the good folks at the EMMA field forum site at www.simflight.com for moral support and preview comments.

Thanks to Terry Hanson, a new friend and beta tester. Also a budding designer, watch for his version of Griffith airport!

Finally the STUFF:

This scenery is freeware and is copyrighted. You may not include this scenery in any pay-ware in any form, no matter what, no way, no how...without my written consent.

Of course, you use this freeware with no guarantees, or warrantees of any kind. Its been tested and will undoubtedly work great, but if it were to cause a problem for you, you have only my sympathy.

If you'd like to upload this to any other sites, that's fine, just include this file completely and let me know, it's fun to follow where it's uploaded.
